Dress for Your Shape, Not Your Weight!

Choosing clothes that flatter your body shape rather than fixating on the number on the scale has taken on a profound significance in my life today, and let me share with you why through a personal story.
After the birth of my first son, I became fixated on returning to my pre-baby weight. My dissatisfaction extended beyond mere appearance – I felt frumpy and unattractive, especially because I couldn’t fit into a particular pair of jeans. My so-called “skinny jeans” pair was significant to me. They were a cute pair from Esprit that I cherished, and my self-esteem seemed intricately tied to my ability to fit into them. The frustration led me to extreme measures, even considering diet pills from the local health food shop at the Mall in a desperate attempt to reclaim a version of myself I thought was necessary. Today, the realization hits home: it’s not about fitting into a certain size but embracing and dressing for the body I have now.

But It Was The Advice I Got Here Which Helped Me….Eventually!

I am sure the sales girl must have seen this sort of thing before. Staring at me with pity conversation went something like this.
Her – “How old is your baby?”
Me – “Two months”
Her – “You want to lose weight because?”
Me – “I’m fat and I need to get back into my jeans”
Her – “Throw out the jeans”
Me – (horrified) “I can’t do that!”
Her – “Why not? You’ve just had a baby, you shouldn’t be focussed on losing weight, you should be focussed on your baby. Plus, your body shape can change when you’ve had a child.”
Me – “Haven’t heard that one before.”
Her – “Yep, your hip bones can move which is why those jeans probably don’t fit. Your shape has changed a little”

I left without buying the pills and thought about what she said. I eventually did throw out those jeans, but it did take me another couple of months. And with it, went that horrible feeling. I got some new ones which fitted my new body.
It was this experience that helped me re-examine myself and eventually led me down the path of trying to find out what would work on my shape. It brought me to where I am today – fit and happy in the body I have!
I now only focus on styles which suit my larger waist and my different shaped hips!

Let It Go!

What’s your equivalent of my “skinny jeans”? We all have that one piece of clothing we reserve for a future, slightly slimmer version of ourselves. My suggestion? Let it go. Whatever is hindering you from embracing your current self, be it a size-related expectation or a waiting game for weight loss, consider discarding or passing it on. Focus your efforts on understanding your body shape and discovering what complements your unique form. I’ve found that not only do I look better now, but, more importantly, I feel better about myself. That’s why I’m sharing this piece of advice with you: “Dress for your shape, not your weight!” It’s a path to long-term happiness.
