Feeling great about your look starts with creating balance. This to me is the most important element to get your head around. No matter what your body shape is, if you want to create a look that you’ll love, the first thing you need to do is look at how your clothes are creating balance in your figure.

Let’s take the inverted triangle as an example. Her shoulders are broad and her hips aren’t as wide as her shoulders. So to create balance in her figure, what she needs to do is to add volume to the bottom half of her body. That’s it. It truly is that simple. However, even if you feel you have a different body shape and you think your shoulders look broad here are some dressing techniques that will help them look less broad.

How to Make your Shoulders Look Less Broad Technique One

You need to draw attention away from your shoulders and put the focus elsewhere on your body. One of the easiest ways to do this, is to either wear a v-neck top or shirt. This style draws the eye down and away from your shoulders.

What else will do this? A longer necklace. This will also draw attention away from your shoulders and put it elsewhere on your body. What I like to do is to knot a long necklace, thus creating the appearance of a v-neck using an accessory. I like doing this because v-neck t-shirts are a bit few and far between these days.

Widen the Bottom Half of Your Body. Technique Two

Another easy way to create balance between shoulders and hips is to wear a style that provides some width to the bottom half of your body.

Styles such as a-line, bootcut pants and jeans, flowy skirts, gathered skirts, wide-leg jeans, and pants with side pockets, just to name a few, are perfect ways to add width and create proportion with your shoulders.

Technique Three: The Type of Sleeve Can Help to Reduce Width

There are a couple of different types of sleeves that will draw attention away from the shoulder area.
Dolman sleeves are one of these styles. They create a loose-fitting look that can help minimise the width of shoulders.

Raglan sleeves are another favourite because they have diagonal lines that can soften the shoulders.

Even sleeves that end at the elbow can assist in putting the focus on the arms instead of the shoulders.
