Gawking at celebrity fashion fails online may be amusing, but we’ve all been the victim of a fashion fail at one point or another. Okay, let’s be honest – multiple times. It usually goes something like this…

The Online Shopping Fail

[su_column size=”1/2″]You’re browsing online websites, when suddenly you see it – the dress you can’t possibly live another moment of your life without. You can almost hear the choirs of angels singing as you enter your credit card number and shipping information. The days drag by as you wait with bated breath for your parcel to arrive.

Today is finally the big day. You know this because you’ve been obsessively refreshing the tracking information online. Finally, your package arrives and you tear open the package to behold your treasure. The dress is even more beautiful than you ever imagined. [/su_column]

Or rather, it is until you try it on. Although the dress technically “fits” and you don’t need a larger or smaller size, the dress just doesn’t look the same on you as it did when you saw it on the model on the website. Heartbroken, you dig the empty package out of the garbage, searching for packing slip with the return instructions.

Or maybe the story went something like this…

The Magazine Ad Fail

[su_column size=”1/2″] [/su_column]
[su_column size=”1/2″]It’s a lazy Saturday and you’re hanging out on the couch in your comfy yoga pants and t-shirt, flipping through your favorite magazine. It feels great to not have anything to do today so that you can take the time to kick back and relax for a change. You turn the page and the woman in the advertisement has you absolutely mesmerized. She looks so polished and put together in her sharp jacket accented with an eye-catching pop of color from her blouse. And of course, she’s wearing a pair of perfectly tailored trousers. You note the brand of the items and set the magazine aside to quickly get dressed. You weren’t planning on leaving the house today, but some things just can’t wait.

On the way to the store, you can’t help imagining what you’ll look like wearing that outfit in the office on Monday. You’ll look so stylish and professional, you’re sure your boss will have to give you a raise on the spot. When you get in the shop, you scan the clothes until you have your eyes on the prize. You find the outfit in your size and head to the fitting room with a big smile on your face.

When you put the clothes on, you turn to the mirror in eager anticipation, only to be shocked at the sight you’re seeing. What looked polished on the model, just looks frumpy on you. You quickly leave the store empty handed, planning a stop to pick up some ice cream on your way home. [/su_column]

Sound familiar? Everyone has experienced a fashion fail like these at some time in their life. But what if it doesn’t have to be this way? Fashion experts know how to avoid these types of fashion fails.

The Fashion Expert’s Method

When a fashion expert sees a dress that the love online, in a fashion magazine, or on the runway, they don’t just start fantasizing about it and purchase it blindly. Instead, they start studying the model wearing the dress and ask themselves an important question – “Is my body the same shape as the model wearing the dress?”

If the answer is “no”, then they know that they cannot expect the dress to perform in exactly the same way on their body as it does on the model’s body. So how do they know what’s going to work on their body? First of all, they understand the shape of their body and what it looks like. Using this knowledge, they know how different styles will fit on their own body and where the
outfit will fall on their hips, waist, and shoulders.

But I’m Not a Fashion Expert
