Summer Capsule Wardrobe Basics My Foundation Pieces

Summer capsule wardrobe basics for me always start with my foundation pieces. These are items which I build my wardrobe around and can be worn each year and include:

skirts – one only. I’ve gone denim, but you can choose another fabric or colour. But remember to make it functional so colours such as beige, navy, white usually work the best
jeans/denim – one only and choose between a dark wash or a lighter wash.
shorts – one only so choose a colour which goes beautifully with current items
jackets – one only and I’ve chosen to go denim because the wardrobe is casual
jumpers or cardigans – one cardigan but I’ve chosen a colour which matches 90% of my items and which brings some brightness into the mix

The idea of foundation pieces is that you can have that one item but wear many different tops with them.

I will usually spend more on these items as I don’t want to replace them each year. I want these summer capsule wardrobe basics to give me good wear and last for 2 years minimum.

When it comes to tops which go into your summer capsule wardrobe basics have a mix of plain pieces and in-style print pieces. I like my plain t-shirts or tops to be well made so that I can extend them into the next season. More on trend items can be purchased quite inexpensively than retired after that season.

I’ve chosen six pieces which is plenty especially if you’re working.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe Basics Dresses

I love a good dress and actually have more than just four in my wardrobe. However, you might not be as fond of them as I am. So I’ve stuck with four here which can be easily dressed up or down. That’s the key to getting mileage out of these items.

A dressier shoe can elevate an outfit, so just pop a pair of heels with the dress of your choice and see how great it looks. To make an outfit look more casual, but still smart, wear a cute flat and a denim jacket.

Also, mix up your dress styles, buy some classic styles like the t-shirt style of dress and a couple of on trend styles. That way you can wear the t-shirt dresses for a couple of seasons and you don’t have to buy a whole new group of dresses each season just a couple.

Even though I’ve only chosen two pairs of shoes to go with each of these outfits, they work perfectly together. See how each of the items mix and match together. They’re all in the same style so it makes it easy to get a different look but in the same theme. You can easily wear one skirt with many different tops to create your different looks. Having good staples (foundation pieces) is truly the key.
