What does dressing have to do with ballet? Probably not that much really, except that they rely on one thing: balance. Discover some easy styling tips that show you how to create balance in your outfits.
Let me ask you something. Have you ever stood in front of the mirror, looking at an outfit you’ve picked out, and thought that something was not quite right?
It’s probably because the balance in that outfit is off.
Striking the right balance in dressing is crucial to how an outfit looks on you. If the balance is out, then you get that niggling, ‘something is not quite right feeling’.
So below, I’ve put together some straightforward style tips to help you create balance in your outfits.
Instead of wearing two flowy or baggy clothing items, try pairing the flowy/baggy item with a fitted item to keep the balance in an outfit.
This is easily done with tops and bottoms. For example, if you have a flowy top add a fitted skirt, pants or pair of jeans. On the opposite side, if your pants are wide-leg, opt for a top that you can tuck into your pants to create a waist and create balance in the outfit.
Flared skirts looked best when paired with a fitted top. Below, I’ve given you three examples of this in action.
This is an interesting one. If you have too many competing styles, an outfit can become imbalanced. For example, a floral or patterned dress looks best with simple shoes. That means simple in style and simple in colour. The dress on the left already has plenty of gorgeous patterns in it. Adding another coloured item would cause that item to compete with the dress, causing the imbalance.
The gold necklace in the middle is a statement piece all on its own. If you add bigger, competing items of clothing, the outfit becomes unbalanced. A simple style of dress complements the necklace and draws attention to it.
I love a good leopard print shoe, but I’ve seen this pattern overused. The shoes are your statement here. So, instead of being tempted to pair the boots with a leopard print top, simply choose an outfit in a plain colour. This means that the shoes will be the highlight of the outfit, keeping it all together without looking overdone.
