A timeless little black dress

For Your Body Shape!

One item of clothing that has stood the test of time is a little black dress. It’s versatile and elegant can be worn for most occasions, dressed up or dressed down. But how do you choose the perfect black dress for your body shape, that will stand the test of time?

Simplicity of style is the key, that is the first thing you should look for in any style and for any body shape. You can use accessories from the season to reflect the years fashion style.

Below I’ve outlined some tips that you can use to choose a little black dress for your body shape.

Little Black Dress For a Pear Shaped Body

An a-line dress is a timeless style that is honestly seen each season in the stores each season.

The skirt of the dress will skim over your hips and thighs, but the wider neckline with the sleeve sitting right on the shoulder will provide an optical illusion of a wider shoulder line which then brings your shoulders in balance with your hips.

As you have a balanced body shape the best styles for you are simple without any oversized embellishments. The straight black dress with a square neckline is classic in style and will stay in season for years to come.

The wrap dress just doesn’t date and I always suggest women have a couple of different wrap dresses in their closets as staples. This style will keep your curves in proportion, but the a-line skirt will flow over your hips beautifully.

Little Black Dress For an Inverted Triangle Body Shape

The best styles for your shape are ones that are streamlined through the top but add some volume to the bottom half of your body so that you create balance in your figure.

The one shoulder dress has an asymmetric style which skims over the lower half of your body but flares towards the hem creating balance in your figure. The one shoulder style will really put your shoulders on show but won’t make them appear wider.

Little Black Dress For an Apple Body Shape

As you have an apple body shape you need to look for styles that will skim over your tummy so that it draws attention away from your midsection. Look for styles that drape instead of clinging to your belly and that also have a lower cut top to draw the eye up and away from your middle.

Dresses that cling around your knees will also draw attention to your middle, so look for styles like a-lines, wrap or a bias cut to create balance in your frame.

Little Black Dress For a Rectangle/Straight Body Shape

With a straight body shape you need to look for styles that will define your waist and add shape to your frame. Ruffles, fit and flare styles, wrap dresses, dresses with ruching all add some curve to your body to soften those straight lines.

The dress on the left has a lovely, wide curved neckline with ruching right down the front that helps to soften your lines and create curve in your body. The ruching also helps to hide a little belly if you have one like I do. The Wells pleated dress has a corset like bodice that flares out to a fuller skirt that adds curve to the bottom half of your body. It’s a classic style that won’t date.
