Shoes to Wear With Jeans?

See the Styles That Go Together Perfectly

Thoes are one of my favourite accessories, so today’s topic centres around which shoes to wear with jeans.  It was a question that had been asked by a client of mine recently, so I thought you might be interested, too.

Straight

Straight-leg jeans are always in style, so I’ve started with these. This style will end up sitting just under your ankle bone, so shoes to wear with these jeans are plentiful. The shoe shows off beautifully, so you can wear flats and heels, including a stiletto, block, or wedge; they all look fabulous.

Knee-high boots are the only style I don’t recommend with a straight pair of jeans. This is because the denim around the ankle isn’t skinny enough, so your jeans will bunch around the knee and won’t look as sleek. Instead, try a pair of jeggings with knee-high or thigh-high boots.

Skinnies

Continuing on, the best shoes to wear with your skinny jeans are virtually the same styles as your straight-leg jeans, with the addition of knee-high or over-the-knee boots. Skinny jeans work the best with these boots as they stay in place, and you get a really lovely seamless line.

Bootcut

Your bootcut or flared-bottom jeans are really the ones that need a little thinking about.  If you’re going to wear your bootcut jeans with flats, please hem them to that length.  Likewise, if you’re going to wear them with high shoes, hem them for that height of shoe/boot.  Bootcut really doesn’t look good when you can see the hem has been stepped on and ripped because the wearer has tried to wear the same style with a heel and flats.  I’ve seen this a lot, and I don’t recommend it.

Cropped Denim

Moving onto the cropped style, which also applies to a flared crop or a skinny crop.  The trick to remember with cropped jeans is that they need to sit right below where your calf ends and the bottom part of your leg starts to taper in.  This is the slimmest part of your leg. If they sit right on your calf, it draws attention to the calf and makes your leg look wider than what it is.  It’s just an optical illusion.  Please see the image below.

Boyfriend/Mom Style

The next style is the boyfriend and/or Mom style. These two styles I’ve put together because they are similar.  Whether you’d like to dress your jeans up or down, these shoes and ankle boots look great with this style of jeans.  The boyfriend is usually a bit shorter in length so you can have good fun with some great styles of shoes to really show off your taste!

Wide Leg

The final pair is the wide leg style. These are incredibly popular currently and they lend themselves to a wide variety of styles. A shorter bootie looks great as do flats or high shoes. The newly minted ballet flats also look good with this style of denim.

A good rule of thumb is that when you’re selecting a style of shoes to go with your denim look for a style that will keep your look balanced. That really is the key. Plus, these styles will also look great if you also have pants in these styles.
